Seitan is made from the protein in wheat flour after the starch is washed away. It has a meat like texture, and can be made with different tastes depending on the spices used in the mixture and the cooking technique and flavorings used to prepare it.
Rebecca demonstrates how to make homemade seitan in this Hungry Nation video. You will see, there is a lot of work involved in washing the starch out of the flour mixture when you start with plain wheat flour. however, it is much easier to prepare when you start with vital wheat gluten, which already has the starch washed away from the wheat flour.
Seitan is a very interesting product. A large number of different preparation techniques can be used to change its flavor and texture.
It’s a favorite vegan meat substitute. Commercially prepared seitan designed to taste like different meats are available in good supermarkets, and on-line. Try making some yourself.
