Be outside in the sunshine enough, or
Take enough vitamin D supplements
to maintain your vitamin D level above 30 nm/ml

There is substantial controversy about the use of vitamin D supplements.  The early experimental studies used dosages that were too low because of fear of toxicity.  Researchers reported no benefit for taking vitamin D supplements.  Eventually, other researchers found that toxicity occurred only with extremely high dosages.  The result of this confusion is the literature contains a multitude of studies that are useless because they experimented with dosages that were too low.  Also, it is important to measure the actual blood serum level in patients.  It may be necessary to vary the vitamin D supplement dosage based on BMI, skin pigment, absorption, etc.  So, unless vitamin D supplement studies use actual blood serum levels and appropriate dosage levels above the early recommendations, their results are suspect.
